This is going to be a bit different then others you may
have read, as many focus on the Pagan basis to leave the other holidays
and not the primary reason we should be celebrating the Biblical
Holidays, Jesus; so if you're looking for Ishtar, Sinter Claus, Bunnies
or Krampus here you won't find it. If you're looking for history on why
is there division, what happened that most Christians do not follow
these days, it won't be here. This writing is focused on what the Bible
tells us, what it has to say about these days, some traditions
associated to these days (Not exhaustive) and how my family puts them
into practice. These will not even have all scriptures involved relating
to the individual Holy Days, or we'd be here forever. Please take these
writings as an into to, and add your own research.
Let's
begin in the Bible, the best place for every Beginning! I primarily use
the Complete Jewish Bible, and so that's what all italicized quotes
will be from unless otherwise stated, but please do check them against
your own versions. First, we need to know a big part to all the Holy
Days, and holidays, that will get covered in this series, the beginning
of the Shema. Found in Deuteronomy 6:4-7
4 “Sh’ma, Yisra’el! Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad [Hear, Isra’el! Adonai our God, Adonai is one]; 5 and you are to love Adonai your God with all your heart, all your being and all your resources. 6 These words, which I am ordering you today, are to be on your heart; 7 and
you are to teach them carefully to your children. You are to talk about
them when you sit at home, when you are traveling on the road, when you
lie down and when you get up.
Primarily
what I want you to see here is in verse seven, Teach these things to
your children. The Holy Days and two holidays that I'll be going over
are absolutely amazing ways to teach the Bible to our children and help
them learn about God and foster their own relationships with him! If you are interested in more way to teach these things to you children I would point you to Celebrations of the Bible: A Messianic Children's Curriculum. It has craft ideas and lessons for each of the Holy Days.
